Anatomic Directions
Understanding anatomic directions helps describe the locations of structures in relation to other structures or locations in the body.
1. Anterior/Posterior    2. Lateral/Medial
Anatomic Directions
Ventral & Anterior: Refer to the front surface of the body. (e.g., Routine venipuncture is performed on the ventral surface of the forearm).
Dorsal & Posterior: Refer to the back surface of the body. (e.g., Hand venipuncture).
Lateral: Means more toward the side, away from the central axis. (e.g., the thumb is lateral to the other fingers).
Medial: Means more toward the middle.
Inferior: Below. (e.g., The mouth is inferior to the nose).
Superior: Above.
